Twin pregnancies can be an exciting and sometimes unexpected journey for expectant parents. While the incidence of twin pregnancies has increased in recent years, there are still many misconceptions about the odds of having twins and the factors that influence the likelihood of a multiple pregnancy. A common question that twin parents encounter – How did you get twins? What are the chances of having twins?

On average, the incidence of twin pregnancies is around 1 in 80 pregnancies, which means that about 1.25% of pregnancies result in twins.

–––

The likelihood of having twins can vary depending on several factors:

Fertility treatments:

The use of fertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI), can increase the likelihood of having twins or higher-order multiple pregnancies.

Maternal age:

The chances of having twins increase with maternal age, particularly for women over the age of 35.

Family history:

If there is a family history of twins, the chances of having twins may be higher. This also means that if you already have multiples, the chances of you expecting multiples again are also higher... just like how Roger Federer and Mirka Federer first had their identical twin daughters Myla and Charlene followed by identical twin sons Lenny and Leo five years later!

Race and ethnicity:

Certain racial and ethnic groups, such as African Americans and Hispanics, have a slightly higher incidence of twin pregnancies compared to other groups.

While twin pregnancies can be exciting, they also come with increased risks and complications for both the mother and the babies. To mummies pregnant with twins, try to eat well and do ensure that you receive regular prenatal care by your doctor(s)! We’re so psyched for you and can’t wait for you to join the tribe. As for twin daddies – be sure to lend your best support. All the best!
