"How do you guys go anywhere?"
is a question we frequently get. Indeed, having multiples can bring about unique challenges when it comes to transportation.
"As new triplet parents in Singapore, we quickly discovered the challenges of moving about with 3 newborns. With a slew of health checkups and vaccinations scheduled for the children, we needed a safe and reliable way of transportation. Initially, we explored public transport but realised that it would be challenging to travel with three babies, a huge diaper bag and a stroller. If we wished to use baby car seats on a taxi, we’d need to grow extra arms to cart them around or ask another adult along to help carry them. After much deliberation, we decided to purchase a 7-seater. It turned out to be a great investment afterall, as it took us to lots of places with the triplets all around Singapore easily."

Here are 5 points to consider when navigating transportation needs for families expecting multiples such as twins and triplets, or multiple young children (including those with Irish Twins!):
1. Plan Ahead
Before your babies arrive, plan out your transportation needs for doctor's appointments, grocery shopping, and other daily activities. You may need to adjust your schedule or find alternative transportation methods to accommodate your family's needs.
2. Consider Car-sharing
If you have friends or family members with children of a similar age, consider carpooling or car sharing to save on transportation costs.
3. Look into Public Transportation
Depending on where you live, public transportation may be a viable option for getting around with your multiples. Research bus and train routes to see if they can accommodate your family's needs. Most bus drivers are happy to accommodate and help you if you’re travelling alone with multiples. When it comes to moving about with twins, it is possible to navigate most places in Singapore with good planning especially if you have another adult to assist you.
4. Budget for Transportation Costs
Make sure to factor in the costs of transportation when creating a budget for your growing family. This may include the cost of a new vehicle, gas, insurance, season parking, taxes and ongoing maintenance expenses.
05. Assess Your Current Vehicle (if any)
Take a close look at your current vehicle to determine if it can accommodate the needs of your growing family. If you have a small car, you may need to consider upgrading to a larger vehicle that can accommodate multiple car seats, strollers or a wagon. If you're considering upsizing to a larger vehicle, you'll need to factor in the cost of a larger down payment, a potentially higher monthly car payment, and higher insurance premiums. Don't forget ongoing costs of fuel, maintenance and parking as well.

When making decisions about transportation, do consider both the immediate costs and the long-term expenses that come with owning and maintaining a larger car. Car ownership in Singapore is costly. With the added financial considerations of a growing family, we urge you to consider and discuss options thoroughly with your partner before making a decision.
